You Are What You Eat is a series of photographs by San Antonio-based Mark Menjivar which gives insight into various people’s lives through the contents of their refrigerators. Throughout the years Menjivar has slowly developed a deep interest in the food we consume and the effect it has on us as individuals and taking his new interest to another level, he began shooting the fridges of people from all walks of life – Republicans, members of the NRA, former POWs, vegetarians, and the extremely poor.
I have found underwear, snakes, pubic hair, bugs, batteries, placentas, a lazy susan, mystery items that not even the owners knew what they were, and more. I think that the fridge can be a glimpse into a lifestyle that someone is leading. It can never be a full picture, but it can give us hints.”
